Agriculture & Development
THE FARM is the hub of all Choshen Farm activities. Founded in 2006, this 25 hectare (62 acre) farm was started for the purpose of connecting with our neighbors in this agrarian society.
Each year we have planted using organic/conservation farming methods to promote good agricultural development in the community. The farm also hosts an extensive chicken project comprising 100 laying hens (for eggs) and 70 (ever increasing) “village chickens” (for meat). Seven fish ponds grace the beautiful landscape in one section of the farm, providing a model for excellent resource management and promotion of rural aquaculture.
Current crops include the larger field crops maize, soy beans, peanuts, and beans, which are complimented by year-round gardens brimming with tomatoes, onions, cabbage, sweet potatoes, Chinese cabbage, carrots, pumpkins and whatever else seems to be popping up! The vast majority of food produced on the farm (nearing 100%) is directed to the Home Based Care project for distribution to clients living with HIV/AIDS, TB and other chronic illnesses.
The farm prides itself on using appropriate, but innovative techniques of agricultural development and overall farm management. Those who come to work or simply observe at the farm are able to walk away with a plethora of ideas for fieldwork, animal husbandry, natural resource development and planning methods.
Above and beyond its practical utility, the farm is a key site for relational development. The free and open environment for growing and learning, coupled with the Biblical drive for excellence in all things provides an excellent discipleship environment for people of all ages. Our intentional investment in those workers who have labored alongside us for years has born much fruit in their lives and ours. Everyone involved at the farm understands that our purpose is to benefit the community to the glory of God and for the good of the people. Such an ethos for “mere farming” has greatly shaped Choshen’s role in the community at large. The Farm is also home to the ministry house which is frequently visited by the province’s Peace Corps Volunteers and is a home away from home for short term teams coming to serve in Fimpulu.
